José Miguel Martínez Zapater got his PhD in Biology from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (1983) and was postdoctoral fellow at the MSU-DOE Plant Research Laboratory (East Lansing, Michigan, USA) between 1984 and 1988. He later became a researcher at the National Institute of Agricultural Research (INIA) in Madrid and moved to the National Research Council (CSIC) at the National Center for Biotechnology in Madrid in 1998. Since 2009 he is acting as scientific director for the Institute for Vine and Wine Sciences (Joint Research Institute of the CSIC, University of La Rioja and Government of La Rioja) in Logroño (La Rioja). His research activity has always been focused on the genetic and molecular analysis of plant reproductive development both in model systems (Arabidopsis thaliana) and in crop species. Since 1998 he has contributed to the development of genomic tools in grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) and their use, among other topics, to the study of grapevine domestication process and the genetic origin of traditional varieties. Some of these tools, such as a collection of 10000 SNP genotyped in over 700 European varieties will be used within the FRUITCOM project to link seed remains from archaeological sites with traditional varieties still cultivated nowadays.
